The chain breaks on the day you decide it's ruined
Habits do not usually die from a single missed day. They die from what you decide the missed day means. A strict streak makes that decision for you — it shows a zero, and the zero says "start over, if you can be bothered". Most people can't.
One finished session a day, and a freeze for the days you miss
Finish one five-minute session and the day counts. Miss a day and a freeze is spent automatically to cover it — you do not have to notice, plan for it, or tap anything. The streak carries on. Your longest-ever run is kept permanently, whatever the current number is.
A target you can hit while ill, travelling or slammed is a target that survives real life. That is the point of making the daily requirement five minutes.
Built for the ordinary days
A habit is made by the unremarkable days, not the inspired ones. A forgiving streak keeps you in the game on the unremarkable days, which is exactly when a strict one throws you out. More on this in the five-minute rule.
